| E
- Concerning Your Own Character |
| (41) |
Be
holy in all manner of conversation |
| 1
Pet 1 : 15-16 |
As
obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had
when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is
holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be
holy, because I am holy." |
(41)
contd. |
Without
holiness, no man shall see the Lord |
| Heb
12 : 14 |
Make
every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy;
without holiness no-one will see the Lord. |
| (42) |
Be
wise as serpents, harmless as doves |
| Matt
10 : 16 |
[Jesus
said] "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.
Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as
doves." |
| Phil
2 : 15 |
...so
that you may become blameless and pure, children of God
without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which
you shine like stars in the universe. |
(42)
contd. |
Not
fools |
| Eph
5 : 15-17 |
Be very
careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making
the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's
will is. |
(42)
contd. |
Gentle,
meek, kindhearted, compassionate, merciful, forgiving |
| 2
Tim 2 : 24 |
And the
Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to
everyone, able to teach, not resentful. |
| Tit
2 : 2 |
Teach
the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect,
self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. |
| Eph
4 : 32 |
Be kind
and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just
as in Christ God forgave you. |
| Col
3 : 12 |
Therefore,
as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience. |
| Matt
18 : 35 |
[Jesus
said] "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of
you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." |
| (43) |
Old
and young to be sober, grave, sincere and temperate |
| Phil
4 : 5 |
Let
your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. |
| Tit
2 : 2, 7 |
Teach
the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect,
self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In
your teaching show integrity, seriousness. |
| 1
Pet 1 : 13, 5 : 8 |
Therefore,
prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your
hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is
revealed.
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. |
| (44) |
To
be hearty in everything. "Whatsoever you do, do it heartily as
to the Lord and not to men." |
| Rom
12 : 1-2 |
Therefore,
I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your
bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is
your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to
the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what
God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will. |
| Col
3 : 23 |
Whatever
you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the
Lord, not for men, |
| (45) |
To
be watchful, vigilant, brave, joyful, courteous, and manly |
| 1
Cor 16 : 13 |
Be on
your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be
strong. |
| Phil
4 : 4 |
Rejoice
in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! |
| 1
Thess 5 : 6, 8, 10 |
So
then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be
alert and self-controlled.
But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled,
putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of
salvation as a helmet.
He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may
live together with him. |
| 2
Pet 1 : 5-7 |
For
this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith
goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge,
self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to
perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness;
and to brotherly kindness, love. |
| (46) |
Be
sympathetic with others both in their sorrows and in their joys |
| Rom
12 : 4-5 |
Just as
each of us has one body with many members, and these members
do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are
many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. |
| (47) |
All
of you be clothed with humility, not proud, minding not high things,
but condescending to men of low estate |
| Luke
14 : 11-13 |
[Jesus
said] "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or
dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or
relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite
you back and you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet,
invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you
will be blessed." |
| Rom
11 : 20 |
... do
not be arrogant, but be afraid. |
| Rom
12 : 3-16 |
[Paul
said] For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do
not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather
think of yourself with sober judgement, in accordance with the
measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one
body with many members, and these members do not all have the
same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and
each member belongs to all the others. We have different
gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is
prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it
is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;
if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing
to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is
leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy,
let him do it cheerfully.
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is
good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one
another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep
your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope,
patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's
people who are in need. Practise hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice
with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in
harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to
associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. |
| Phil
2 : 3 |
Do
nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in
humility consider others better than yourselves. |
| Col
3 : 12 |
Therefore,
as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience. |
| 1
Pet 5 : 5-6 |
Young
men, in the same way be sumbmissive to those who are older.
All of you, clothe yourselves with humility towards one
another, because,
"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the
humble."
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he
may lift you up in due time. |
| (48) |
Be
patient towards all, especially the weak and erring |
| Rom
12 : 10, 14 : 1, 15 : 1 |
Be
devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another
above yourselves.
Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement on
disputable matters.
We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak
and not to please ourselves. |
| 1
Thess 5 : 14 |
And we
urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the
timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. |
(48)
contd. |
Put
away anger, wrath, bitterness, and all evil speaking |
| Eph
4 : 31 |
Get rid
of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along
with every form of malice. |
| 1
Pet 2 : 1 |
Therefore,
rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy,
and slander of every kind. |
| (49) |
Follow
after whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of
good report, virtuous, and praiseful |
| Phil
4 : 8 |
Finally,
brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is
right, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or
praiseworthy - think about such things. |
(49)
contd. |
Abhor
evil, and abstain from its appearance |
| Rom
12 : 9 |
Love
must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. |
| 1
Thess 5 : 22 |
Avoid
every kind of evil. |
| (50) |
Things
not to be named, still less practised, among saints: adultery,
fornication, uncleanness, drunkenness, covetousness, wrath, strife,
sedition, hatred, emulation, boasting, vain glory, envy, jesting,
foolish talking |
| Eph
5 : 3-4 |
But
among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,
or any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are
improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity,
foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but
rather thanksgiving. |
| Gal
5 : 19-21 |
The
acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality,
impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred,
discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions and envy; drunkeness, orgies, and the
like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like
this will not inherit the kingdom of God. |
